Don’t Let The Belugas Go Silent
There are only 284 beluga whales left in the waters of Cook Inlet, Alaska. In a few years, there may be none. The Apache Alaska Corporation has the approval of the Obama Administration to employ seismic airguns in the waters. They are also moving towards using the airguns around the Atlantic Coast, which many marine mammals call home.
Seismic airgurns are used by academic geologists and the oil and gas industry to gather imformation on sub-surface geological features. The guns produce explosive impulse of sound directed toward the ocean floor. The sound then creates echos in the water that we are able to read and gather information from.
The loud booming sound the airguns give off are starting to drive beluga whales, as well as fish and sea turtles, out of their habitats. The sounds can in short interfere with the whales ability to feed, breed, navigation, communicate, and avoid predators.
As the NRDC, is fighting in court to get the Apache Alaska Corporation out of the waters in Alaska, they still need our help getting the message out there. Vist their website for more information.
And take action by sending a message to the Obama Administration here.
